Solar power has been around for quite a while, but it's only in recent years that it's really taken hold within the UK. Although these devices may help you to save some money, their quality could be an issue. In fact, some of these products are pretty poor during the summer months too. Just some of the problems facing these cheaper alternatives include short running time, dim lighting or in some circumstances even a failure to work at all. These low budget devices may work better in brighter countries but unfortunately in the UK, we may have to fork out more for a product that works.

The type of light that you choose can also have an effect on the overall performance. If you are looking for a brighter effect, this could be difficult to achieve in the darker months. Also, it's much easier for the sun to charge a single smaller light such as a garden lamp, compared to a string of fairly lights. Another issue which will affect the efficacy of your lights is where you place them. It goes without saying that any solar powered device should be situated in direct sunlight and this means outdoors.
Don't expect to get good results from solar lights which are placed underneath a tree or inside of a window.

When deciding what light to buy it pays to do some research beforehand. Obviously, choosing a reputable shop or website and reading reviews is paramount. You should also pay particular attention to the hardware itself, for example, the solar panel and the batteries which are used. Generally speaking the larger the solar panel the better but issues such as quality will also have an effect. The rechargeable batteries which power your lights, come in many different capacities and the higher the capacity the more charge it will hold. Solar technology has come on leaps and bounds in recent years but there is still a long way to go.
In the meantime, customers who are looking for dramatic and reliable outdoor lighting have two choices- invest in a higher quality solar product which will be much more expensive or utilise mains operated lights.
